HALLOWE’EN GAMES.

HOW TO PLAY THESVi. For hundreds of years Hallowe’en (October 31) has been a time when special customs were observed, and some of them were games that are quite good fun. Here arc a few. This is the time for apple games. You’ve all tried to. eat an apple hanging from a piece of string. Now try tying the apple to a thin piece of elastic and see what happens.

And then there’s that splashy game of ducking for apples. That’s a special Hallowe’en game. too. Or if it is cold'.'enough for a fire you can roast'nuts. Name each one after a person and see what happens. If the nut burns brightly it.means good luck; if'it only smoulders, not much fun. If it hops about, adventures are coming. Witch’s Broth. Dressed like a witch, in a pointed cap and a big shawl someone throws from her basket into a big cauldron crumpled pieces of coloured paper, on each of which is a “fortune” written. All the time she is singing or . muttering under her breath. She stirs the stew slowly, and dips out one thing at a time. Then she solemnly recites — “Snakes, bats, Hallowe’en stew, Here is the Fortune brewed for YOU I" The last person pointed to receives the “fortune.” And then she goes on dipping and pointing till the stew is all gone. Your “fortune” is concealed in apples, too. Cut them in half and count the seeds. This is what they mean — 1. Continued hard luck. 2. Disappointment. 3. Happiness. 4. Unexpected present. 5. Very rich. 6. You will be famous. 7. A trip round the world. 8.. Your wish will come true. 9. You will be a professor. Then you can make your own “ghost” like this— Grease a piece of paper and write your name in ink along Ihe crease, and rub it gently. Then open it and hold it up so that the name stands on end, and you will see your “ghost.”
