NARROW ESCAPE.

OVERCOME BY FUMES. WAIHI, Wednesday. A narrow escape from death by suffocation was experienced this week by Mr E. Roberts, a member of a Waihi prospecting parly. The men at the time were sinking a shaft on what is known as the Old Boulder claim, between Waihi and Waitawheta. When at a depth of 50ft they encountered an influx of water, which was followed later by gas. After the firing of the last shot Mr Roberts went down the winze and, meeting the ascending fumes, was Overcome. Fortunately he was rescued just in time by his companions.
