NEW YORK STOCK MARKET.

RECORDS BROKEN. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) NEW YORK, October 4. The stock market transactions broke records for the year, totalling 3,147,000 shares, 500,000 of which were General Motors, new stock which was the most active issue in the list. The total was spread over a rising market. In the morning there was a drastic decline and in the afternoon, the whole market broke under selling, but the trading was spread out and the tickers were able to keep pace with the fifteen minutes' market. United States steel sustained the heaviest losses, namely three points. At the close of the day General Motors old stock were off 4J and the new 1 5-8.

Expert opinion is divided regarding the permanence of the break, the general belief being that it is a reaction and only a technical correction which probably will be soon eliminated.
