A SPOILT HOLIDAY. SYDNEY 8-HOUR CELEBRATIONS. DAMAGE IN BRITAIN. (United Press Association), _ SYDNEY, October 3.. Bad weather is being experienced in various parts of Australia. In Sydney to-day rain spoiled the Eight Hours’ Day holiday celebrations. There was a heavy thunderstorm accompanied by torrents of rain this morning and frequent showers fell until the afternoon.

The usual street procession, for which elaborate preparations had been made in view of the State elections on Saturday, and the annqal sports meeting had to be postponed. All other outdoor fixtures and excursions, except the races at Randwick, were also abandoned. Further copious falls of rain are reported from the country.

LONDON, October 3

Fierce gales and rainstorms are sweeping England. A number of lives have been lost and extensive damage is reported.

LATER. MANY NARROW ESCAPES. ONE DEATH REPORTED. SERIOUS LOSSES OF STOCK. (Received October 4, 10.10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, October 4. In some places floods in the Yarra Valley and Gippsland are receding. In others there are fears of serious damage. . J . Many reports have been received of narrow escapes from death. At Hey field a youth was drowned while rounding up some horses. Serious losses arc expected among cattle and sheep which were only recently rescued from the droughtstricken country. At Yallourn the old State coal mine was flooded and operations have ceased. The Yarra, La ’Probe and Mac Allister Rivers are rising rapidly. At Traralgon the country is covered to a depth of four feet. Many bridges have been washed away and in the timber country the tram linos have been destroyed.
