THE "REVEILLE” BALANCE SHEET.

(To the Editor). Sir,—The publication of the “Reveille” balance sheet will not do much to silence the criticism of those people who were disappointed with the comparatively small sum realised: For after all the preparation and the apparently successful season that £IOO seemed very much like the “ridiculous mouse” of the proverb. The Sunshine League were asked to accept the responsibility, financial or otherwise, for the production. They consider that they got £IOO for nothing and accordingly resent criticism of their methods. But, that criticism .is justified to a certain extent is shown by the balance sheet. The ends in this case cannot be held to justify the means, and an analysis of the balance sheet shows that the debit side far outweighs the credit. The first item on the debit side is the time and labour given so generously by the performers. The second is the good will of the Hamilton public. The “Reveille" audiences bore testimony to the whole-hearted support that Hamilton always accords to charitable efforts. The fact that Mr Lints made £OO 8s lid, plus £2B 17s for board and lodging, out of Hamilton people’s support of the Sunshine League will do much to damp their enthusiasm. Who can blame them if they feel they have been exploited? Without local talent and the advertisement of a worthy cause Mr Lints could not have made £ll9 out of the “Reveille.” lie made his money out of the name of the Sunshine League; therefore Hamilton people feel they have been had.

Miss Denz’s “Pot Pourri” was a delightful performance, and the large audience had the additional satisfaction of knowing that through it the sum of £BS was raised in one evening for the Beautifying Society. The performers in the “Reveille'’ and in “Pot Pourri” arc equally deserving of praise for their altruistic efforts. The comparison which one cannot help drawing is between the methods of Miss Denz and the Sunshine League.—l am, etc., SUNSHINE.
