MR LEE MARTIN, M.P.

Mr. Lee Martin, who has been returned for Raglan, is a farmer who has graduated into that high calling after a business career. Born in Oamaru 57 years ago, he lived in his younger manhood in Wellington and Wanganui, being in the employ of leading firms of oil and colour merchants. While he was in Wanganui he ran a small suburban farm, with a few cows, as a side-line. lie came to the Waikato and took up his farm at Matangi in 1912. llis farming has prospered and he has given a great deal of time and effort to local public affairs, serving on the Central Electric Power Board, on the school committee, on the Tamahere Road Board for seven years, on the suppliers’ committee of the Glaxo Factory and in the Farmers’ Union. lie is president of the Waikato executive and a member of the provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union. lie has been prominent in the Druids’ organisation, having been on the North Island executive for seven years and having risen to the rank of Grand President. He contested the Hamilton seat against Hon. J. A. Young in the General Election of 1925, standing in the Labour interest, but was defeated, scoring 1900 votes against 6300 cast for Mr Young. A member of-’ the Methodist Church Mr Martin engaged in local preaching in Wanganui anti has been active in various forms of church work in this district, lie is one of the trustees of the Matangi Church. Mr. and Mrs. Martin have six children. The new members’ mother, Mrs Joseph Martin, who recently celebrated her 91st birthday, resides with her son, Rev. J. E. Martin, at Devonport.
