HOME AND FOREIGN. LONDON, Sept. 28. Official returns show a further reduction of 4500 in the registered unemployed on September 19 as compared with the previous week. Although the total slightly exceeds 1,000,000 it is 483,000 less than at the corresponding date last year, when the figures were affected by the coal-min-ing dispute. According to a British official wireless message the general secretary of the Congress, Mr Walter Citrine, was asked to-day whether any communication had been received from the AllRussian Council of Trades Unions with regard to the recent decision of the Trades Union Congress to discontinue co-operation with, the Russian Trade Unions, lie replied that no communication of any kind had been received from Russia. Members drawn from all the political parties in the House of Commons recently attended a conference of Parliamentary Commercial Committees at Rio de Janeiro. Forty-two nations were represented. The British delegates returned to England yesterday greatly impressed by the possibilities in Brazil. BELGRADE, Sept. 29. The Yugoslavian Cabinet has decided upon sweeping economies. They will include the abolition of six Ministries, the reorganisation of the civil service and the sale or lease of State enterprises to private persons or semi-official but independent companies. TOKIO, Sept. 28. The Government has not secured a decisive result in the elections. The Opposition claims to have won a victory, but the Government holds the majority of the seats in the Assembly. MEXICO CITY, Sept. 28. In a combat with Federal troops 34 rebellious Roman Catholic extremists were-killed in the State of Jalisco. A priest who had been taken prisoner was executed. At the Research Conference, which will be opened on October 4, there will be present 170 delegates from all parts of the Empire. They will discuss the best means of combating insect and other pests which are responsible for the destruction of a large portion of the world’s crops every year. The conference will also establish a better paid and better co-ordinated staff of Imperial research workers.

One million houses have been built in Britain since the Armistice, nearly 350,000 of them without any subsidy. Sir H. Kingsley Wood, Parliamentary Secretary to the 'Ministry of Health, stated these » review of the housing position. He said no other country had made such progress, nor had any other expended such, vast sums for the benefit of houseless and badly housed people. It was a world’s record and the greatest social contribution that had been made in Britain since the war.
