ALLEGED FRAUD.
TWO YEARS’ tnSPRESONfVIENT. A

PALMERSTON N., Tuesday. At the Supreme Court William James Cox was charged with stealing, alternate e'ly, receiving, four cheques, valued at nearly £ls, and the sum of £l6, the property of Charles Ilcnry Coley, also with obtaining goods by fraud atT’eilding.
Accused pleaded guilty on the latter charges and not guilty on the first. In outlining the case the Crown Prosecutor said accused was introduced lo Mrs Coley by a friend. They adjourned to a hotel, where they partook of drinks. Mrs Coley later found the cheques and the money were missing. The accused went on to Fending with A lemale companion and another person. Accused was apprehended after lie had attempted to pass one of the cheques in his poscssion, and [he other stolen cheques were also found.
Accused, from the box, denied the theft of ihe.-' cheques.' The jury returned a verdict of guilty without retiring.
Accused, who Jiad a Mrfgthv list, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, and declared an habitual criminal.
