COMMERCIAL NEWS.

HAMILTON MARKETS. Produce. A steady business was transacted over the week. Wheat, maize, and poultry meals continue in good demand, while pollard, sucrosine and barley meal, etc., are selling freely for pig feed. The market for chaff and oats is not too good. Manures are still going out in large quanlitics, and have shown no decrease. Quotations arc as follows:—Fowl wheat, Ss 6d; maize, 9s 3d; oats, Cartons ss, Duns 5s 6d; pollard, 12s 6d; bran, 10s Od; barley meal, 18s; sucrosine, 13s; chaff, local £B, southern £9. No alteration has occurred in manures and top-dressing. Fruit. Apples are in plentiful supply, a good variety being available. A shipment of oranges has just arrived, 17,000 cases coming to hand. Prices should be reasonable if Hie quality is good. Pears arc available in fair supply, while lemons and tomatoes are only on sale in small quantities. Quotations arc as follows: —Apples (cookers), Ballarats 7s to 9s, Wolscys 6s to Bs, Washington 6s to 7s 6d, Pioneers 6s to 7s 6d; caters Delicious 8s 6d to 10s 6d Sturmers 8s to 10s, Jonathans 7s to 9s, Salome 6s to 8s; lemons, 7s to 10s; Island tomatoes, 12s 6d to 15s; pears, Beurrc Deils 7s to 9s, Vickcrs 6s to Bs, Winter Coles 9s to 12s, Winer Nells 9s to lis, Lincoln 7s to 9s. Vegetables. Potato crops are not plentiful at present, and a scarcity exists. Other vegetables are in fair supply, no alteration occurring in prices. Prices are as follows: —Potatoes, £8 to £9 a ton; kumeras, 2s to 4s; onions, 3s to 7s; pumpkins, 5s to 7s 6d; pie and citron melons, 3s to ss; cabbages, 5s to 7s; carrots, parsnips and beet, Is a dozen bundles. Poultry. Messrs J. R. Fow and Co. report an excellent yarding for their weekly sale, the bidding' bemg very eager. Young birds were offered, and one line of White Leghorn hens realised 5s 9d and another 4s. Young ducks were still popular, fetching as high as 4s 3d. Quotations were:—Cockerels, 3s to 4s; heavy hens, ~s lOd to 5s 9d; light breeds, 2s 9d to 5s 9d; old hens, Is 6d to 2s 3c; young ducks, 4s to 4s 3d; old ducks and drakes, Is 7d to 2s; geese, 4s sd. Fish. Flounder is unprocurable at present, but a plentiful supply of fish of all other varieties is coming in and selling readily. Quotations are:—Rock cod, Is; blue" cod, is 3d; tarakihi, sd; moki, 7d, hapuka, Is; butter fish, 9d; king fish, lOd; schnapper, sd; Maori chief, 9d; flounder is priced at Is a lb. Dairy Produce. Eggs still continue in plentiful supply, and have as a consequence dropped in price. Quotations show:— Wholesale price, 2s lOd; retail, 2s 2d. Butter continues at Is Bd, Is 7d, and is 6d.

LONDON MARKETS. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner's Office, under date London, June 8: Tallow.—Spot market quiet at lower prices. Present quotations are: Mutton, fine 365, fair to good 34s to 355, dark to dull 32s to 335; beef, sweet and/or mixed 35s 6d to 38s, fair to good 33s 6d to 35s 6d, dark to dull 31s 6d to 32s 6d; mixed, fair to good 33s to 355, dark to dull 31s 6d to 325; gut, etc. 27s to 3is> 3d. Fruit.—Apples per Tainui arrived satisfactorily and demand is good for all sorts, particularly rod, of which none arc available until the Port Caroline discharges next week. Prices are as follow: Statement, 16s to 20s per case; Newton Pippin, 18s to 20s; Pioneer, 18s; Slurmer, 14s to 17s. Hemp. Manila market quiet. A grade June-August shipments quoted £43 'sellers. Sisal market dull and easier owing to absence of demand. Sales reported of. Tanganyika JuneJuly shipments No. 1 £37 10s, and No. 2 £36 15s c.i.f. New Zealand market quiet, and prices nominally unchanged. Stocks in London at May 31 were 55 tons against 65 tons for same time last year. , Wool.—Bradford market quiet. More demand from Germany for low and medium crossbred yarn, but Home demand still unsatisfactory. Prices for tops are as follows: 64's (merino) warp 4s per lb, average 3s lid; 56's (super half-bred), 2s lOd; 50's (halfbred), 2s 2Ad; 40's prepared, Is 72d.

Auctioneering Company, Ltd., report:— At our weekly stock sale in the Frankton yards yesterday, we had a good yarding of beef and a fair entry of fat and store sheep and fat pigs. Prices were firmer for beef, mutton and fat pigs. Store pigs sold at late rates. Messrs Dalgety and Company, Ltd, report having held their usaal weekly sale at Frankton saleyards on Tuesday, June 21, as under: —There was a moderate yarding of beef and prices were firmer 'for choice young cows and heifers. Ordinary quality ruled the same as last week. Choice young cows and heifers made up to £7 ss; ordinary prime heifers and young cows, £5 5s to £6 10s; light fat cows, £4 10s to £5 2s Gd; inferior fat cows, £3 10s to £4 ss; boners, £2 to £3.There was a fair yarding of cattle, including some good pens of grown bullocks. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, Hamilton, report:—At the Hamilton sale on Tuesday,' we had an average entry of all classes of stock. Fat rattle and sheep both showed an advance from the previous sale. Prime young cows and heifers to the extent of about 15s per head, and sheep 2s to 3s per head. Store cattle met with a good demand. We quote:—Heavy fat steers, £lO 5s to £lO 7s 6d; medium, £9 Is; fat heifers, £7 7s to £7 17s 6d; fat cows, £5 2s 6d to £7; plain do., £4 to £4 18s; veal calves, £2 3s to £2 17s; store cows, £2 2s to £2 15s; Jersey heifers, in calf, £6 10s to £6 17s 6d; Jersey cross, £4 5s to £5 ss; dairy cows, £6 10s to £9 15s; fat wethers, £1 10s to £1 10s 3d; fat ewes, 19s 3d; f.m. ewes, in lamb to S.D. rams, £1 2s. A small yarding of iat pigs came forward, while stores and wcaners were penned in average numbers. The price for fat pigs showed a marked improvement on late sales; stores and weaners maintaining usual rates. A fair demand was shown for the sows close to profit. MINING. PETER MAXWELL GOLDMINING COMPANY, LTD. Extensive developments have taken place in this mine. The manager reports that in his opinion the prospects are exceedingly bright. He considers that the gold proposition at the present stage is the best that has ever been offered to the public, and he believes that the mine will develop into one of the real gold mines of the Dominion. The company has just completed the necessary preliminaries for issuing to the public 125,000 shares of 2s each. Mr W. I. Conradi, of Albany Buildings, is secretary of the company.
