INTO SYDNEY HARBOUR.
FOREIGNERS CHASED. DANE AND RUSSIAN ARRESTED. A chase by police and civilians after two foreigners who were wanted on a charge of having stabbed a man in Miller Street, Pyrmont, ended when one of them was caught on Glebe Island bridge, and the other was fished out of the harbour, into which he had taken a long dive, says a Sydney paper. The -victim of the stabbing was Thomas O’Toole, aged 40, lorry driver, of Remley Street, Lakemba, who was treated in Sydney' Hospital for severe gashes in the back and legs) Ilis condition was regarded as serious. Constables Breen and Caiman, of Clarence Street Station, arrested .two seamen—one a Dane and the other a Russian—and charged them with malicious wounding.
The stabbing, it is said, followed an altercation in Miller Street. Several foreigners, according to Iheir story, moved by the fear that an attempt was being planned to rob them, drew their knives. .: ...
O’Toole, a stranger- in the district, was passing when the rush set in. Before he could step’aside a knife flashed, and he dropped on to the road wounded. , " . ’
The foreigners divided, and a chase ensued after two of them. As it progressed many civilians joined in. Near the Glebe Island bridge one of the fugitives, who was almost exhausted, was caught. The other man dived into the water, and a civilian whose name could not be ascertained, took a “header in” after him.
The foreigner swam to a raft, but his pursuer, with a few strokes, wa3 quickly by his side. lie propelled the man from the water, and police, who .were waiting look him in charge.
