TE AWAMUTU BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. ' ORDINARY BUSINESS. ’ The fortnightly meeting- of the Tc Awamutu Borough GouriciL was held 'last evening, when His Worship- the Mayor (Mr L. G. Armstrong) presided, and there were; also present, Grs. W. Swain, C. A;.. Reilly, C... Bygravc, G. Spinley, J. Montcfiore,; W. .1. North, G. Gifford and J. Marshall. The town clerk (Mr D. Bockett), and the engineer (Mr W. I». R. McGurdie)' were also present. Works Committee’s Report. Frontier Road.—The section of this road from Pakura Street to the Borough boundary at the top of the hill is in a very bad state. The larger cavities should bo filled in with 00 yards of 3-inch metal. The surface holes to be made up with, say 25 yards of 2-inch metal, ’all blinded with finer material and rolled. This will make a surface that can bo travelled on with comfort and safety for a time. The whole of this road should then be treated to a nine feet course ■of bitumen, like Pakura Street. Pakura Street has been taking practically the whole of the Frontier Road traffic ever since it was dealt with, and there are no complaints about the width. Puniu Road also should be dealt with in the same way. Good progress lias been made in the clearing of the creek, about the water supply pipe crossing, and flhe felling of timber likely to strike the pipes in falling, or in floating down the creek. Some blasting of obstructing rocks has also been done. There are some broken drainage pipes in the yard that might be sold. Several enquiries have been made about them lately. The old Ford truck should be sold. The watering cart should also be sold as soon as the summer comes on. Some of the ;Trotting Clubs may take it. The oldtime gear of the town clock has been nnstripped to make room for the more up-to-date gear now installed. An offer has been received from Mr O’Brien. Failing a better market, this offer may be accepted. The gear would cost now about £7 or £B.' The subsidy due from the Government on Kihikihi Road for' dressing maintenance has been paid to. (the Coqncil. Teasdale Strfcet.—The cleaning up of Teasdale Street ha? been pushed on as weather and other necessary work has allowed. No formation work will be done until the weeding is finished

and the Council has.'decided whether i any kerbing and channelling should be done. Tenders have been called for kerbing and channelling on the west side by the chain length.; The length , of the street is 40 chains. Puniu Road. —The section of this road from -the end of the asphalt to the Borough boundary, 34 chains, has been examined to see what amount of 2-inch metal : would be required to patch it up for the yVintcr. The old metal is about 12 feet wide. A great proportion of it is large material, all .striking up above the general level frofe one to three inches high. Persons using the road arc in the habit of letting one wheel run on the side , clear 1 . of" the metal' for' smdoth running. To fill up the pot holes on the * flat portions of the road and the worst ; qf the ruts will take about 20 cubic yards of , metal.—lt was decided that these repairs be chargeable to the : 2 Can> | ■ - • The Works Committee’s report was - ‘adopted. Kerbing and Channelling. * Two tenders had been received for ; concrete kerbing and channelling, one - it £6 10s per chain, and another at * £6 15s. This Brought up the question of whether Teasdale Street should be licrbed and channelled' on both sides of the street. It was shown that it ,'t -was allowed for in the first estimates, o Cr. Spinley said apparently not cn- £ tiugh had been allowed for earthwork., ; Apparently there were 40 chains in *' Teasdale Street to be done.,, ,i ‘ ' ; In aDsw.ec, to. a question Cr. ,Monte--1 flore pointed out that yvhen they found C'they had over-spent on some of the roads they decided to scrap the old schedule and allocate to the streets that had not been done, what seemed ' to them the most reasonable thing to do for them. Teasdale Street had been allocated nearly £llOO, of which about hair had been" spent.' .Cr. Gifford suggested that these tenders be held over to another meeting. 'C. Cr. Spinley finally moved that the ..’engineer prepare a schedule, showing what streets had not been done and ’what was. required to be spent on ’them, according to.,original schedule; (‘also what balance of the loan yvas left. £I-Ie concluded by asking that some- , (thing he done for the footpaths on 'some of those roads that so far have •*not been done. .. It was pointed out in response to an enquiry that there was about half a mile of kerbing in the Council yard •at the present time; 't r ;" ;: Cr. Montcfiore pointed out that they were deferring t(ie kerbing-and channelling again. The Mayor stated that so far he had ■not said' anything about Teasdale Street, but if Councillors had seen the children walking down the roadway, the same as lie did, they would say that if they deferred doing the footpaths they were incurring a grave risk, lie quoted a minute of years ago to the effect that a tender for the kerbing arid channelling be.accepted at £0 18s Cd a chain. He appealed to the Council to have at least the footpath to the High,School done now, without any delay. Cr. Gifford said he would like to have the matter deferred till the next meeting at least', so that they could see the true position ofthe loan. Cr.' Spinley said Alexandra Street down, to the station was in just the same position, with far raoro traffic. Cr. Spinley.'s motion was carried. Cr. Montcfiore then moved that tho lowest tender be accepted for the kerbing and channelling of Teasdale Street on both sides-of the road, the money allocated in January being sufficient for the purpose. . Cr. Reilly said he thought the kerbing and channelling of one side of Teasdale Street would be sufficient for tiio present. The Mayor pointed out that this matter should be gone on with straight away, at least on one side. Cr. Montcfiore amended liis motion to the effect that the tender should be accobtad for tho north side only, the' full length, and this was agreed to. General. • The Mayor said lie had heard that certain work is being started at the . local railway station, and he had taken upon hirosclf to ask the engineer a.t -ohakune to giye local unemployed a - chance on thin work. —Approved. Tho Tatar organiser of tha Work- . off/ Educational Association, Harnil--41 (on,, inquired if, the Conned would consider making a donation to their funds., and £o 53 was granted. (Continued in /sexi column,).

The hon secretary of the To Awamutu Returned Soldiers’ Association, extended a cordial invitation to His Worship the Mayor and the Councillors to attend their annual smoke concert on Juno 30.—The invitation was accepted with thanks.

The Mayor reported oa the meeting that had been called . regarding the proposed electoral ’changes. A map lays been prepared showing alternative suggestions, and also supporting evidence lias been prepared. Cr. Reilly reported regarding the Fire Board’s financial arrangement with them. It will he definitely decided at thb next quarterly meeting, when he-was-sure the Council’s payments from the- Board would be agreed to be paid quarterly. Cr. Bygrave brought up the question of the cleaning of Ihe Mangahnc River on ihc Borough side. He suggested that the Council should notify the ratepayers who lived alongside tho river to clean their side of the river.
