There is a flutter of hearts under palace roofs in Tokio these days, an excitement among high-born maidens consequent upon the announcement from the Imperial Court that a bride is soon to be selected for Japan's Prince Charming, his Imperial Highness Prince Chichibu, the eldest brother of the Emperor, who to-day stands next in line to the throne, lacking a son to the Emperor and Empress. For a consort for the Heir Presumptive the princesses of the various Imperial Houses of marriageable age are being looked over, while it is stated that the choice is not necessarily confined to princesses of the blood, but that daughters of nobles may also consider themselves eligible. After the Coronation.
When the future bride of Prince Chichibu is chosen, in which selection it is likely that the Prince hmiself will have something to say, an informal engagement will be entered into and betrothal gifts will be exchanged, the formal engagement coming at the end of the two years of mourning for the death of the late Emperor. The formal engagement will he followed by a speedy marriage, not Jong after the ceremony of the ritualistic accession of the present Emperor has taken place in the imperial palace in Kyoto, the ceremony that corresponds with the coronation of a monarch in other lands. Prince Chichibu wiil celebrate his twenty-fifth birthday on June 25, when, according- to the way the Japanese compute ages, he will be 20 years old. His brother, the Emperor, was married at 23, and his father, the late Emperor, when he was 21.'
