CONTEST FOR MAYORALTY.

14 NOMINATIONS FOR COUNCIL.

BALLOT ON APRIL 27. Nominations for the Mayoralty, the Borough Council, and the Hospital Board closed at noon to-day. Two candidates seek election as Mayor, Messrs J. R. Fow, the present Mayor, and Mr C. J. W. Barton. Fourteen nominations have been received for the 12 seats on the Borough Council, only seven of last year's council seeking re-election. The ballot will take place on April 27. Following are the names of 'the candidates, sitting members being' denoted by an asterisk: —

DECLINES TO STAND

A deputation of Hamilton business men waited upon Mr P. H. Watts today and urged him to accept nomination for a seat on the Borough Council. Mr Watts' past services to the town were referred to, and the opinion was expressed that he should accept nomination.

Mr Watts thanked the deputation for the courtesy extended to him. He said he had always.been willing- to do what he could in the interest of the town, but it had shown in no uncertain manner that it did not approve of his work, and he did not see his way to invite it to change its mind. CAMBRIDGE. Mayoralty. Charles Hcrmon Priestly and Thomas Francis Richards. The latter is the retiring Mayor. Council.—Henry Allen Bell, Percy Turner Glanville, James Hooker, Samuel Richard James, Thomas Henry Kelly, Joseph McMillan, Robert William Moorehouse, Lawrence Maud Morrin, , Edmund Charles Wallis, Thomas Mcrvyn Wells, Louis Kenneth Wilkinson, John Campbell Sawers, Thomas Henry Boycc, William George Care, Charles William Clark, George Woodhouse Carter. There are nine vacancies. Messrs Bell, Glanville, Moorehouse, Morrin, aWllis, Wells and Boyce were member of the retiring Council.

TE AWAMUTU. Mayoralty.—L. G. Armstrong (unopposed). Council.—J. C. Monteflore, W. Swayne, C. Bygrave, C. A. Reilly, G. Gifford, Jas. North and G. Spinley have been returned unopposed as Councillors. There is another vacancy to be filled on the Council. POWER BOARDS. Te Awamutu. —C. G. Downes, G. Spinley (retiring members), and J. C. Monteflore have been nominated for two vacancies as representatives of the Borough on the Te Awamutu Power Board. Cambridge.—Thos. Francis Richards, Charles William Clark and Thomas Mcrvyn Wells are the Borough nominees for two seats on the Cambridge Power Board. Messrs Richards and Wells are the sitting members. ELECTIONS SLSEWHERE. AUCKLAND, Wednesday. Besides a plethora of city council nominations (41 candidates for 21 seats), there are 1G candidates for the five seats on the Hospital Board, and 10 for four Harbour Board vacancies, making a total of 91 compared witli the previous record of G'J in 1921. The Mayoralty nominations are:— Messrs Geo. Baldwin (sitting), Jas. A. Warnock (deputy), T. Bloodworth, i "l 11. Schmidt. PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. Three candidates have been nominated for the Mayoralty—Messrs R. Edwards, A. J. Graham, and A. E. Bennett.

The present Mayor, Mr F. J. Nathan, is not seeking re-election. There arc 16 candidates for nine seals on he Borough Council. PAHIATUA, Wednesday.

For the Mayoralty Mr J. D. C. Crev?e is unopposed. There are 12 can*-*i-dates for the Borough Council, including all the sitting men, for nine seats. The Hospital Board representative, Mr J. D. C. Crewe, has been returned For the Tararua Power Board, Mr J. unopposed.

Twenty-eight candidates arc standing for 12 seats on Ihc City Council, and 11 for seven seals on the Hospital Board.

WANGANUI, Wednesday

Messrs Hope Gibbons and William Rogers were to-day nominated for the Mayoralty. There arc 22 candidates for the 12 seals on the Council. ASIIBURTON, Wednesday.

Mr Robert Qalbraith was returned unopposed for the Mayoralty for the seventh term.

HASTINGS, Wednesday

Mr G. A. Maddison has been returned unopposed for the Mayoralty. WII AN G AREI, Thursday.

Messrs J. E. Holmes, sitting Mayor, W. V. Tinnewcll, and L. J. Brake have been nominated for the Mayoralty. There arc 14 nominations for nine seats on the Borough Council. NO MAYOR AT RICHMOND.
