HOUSEHOLD HINTS.
Needs No Watching. —When milk is to be heated put it into an ordinary crockery jug and stand it in a saucepan of cold water on gas-ring or stove. The milk is quickly scalded in this way and there is no danger of it boiling over or getting burnt, and there is no saucepan to free from dried milk scum.
Quick Way Patching. —lf the knees of a man’s working trousers have to he patched, unrip the side seam so that the patch can be machined on. It is a simple mailer to run the side seam up again with the sewing machine.
Now Shoes for Old. —Stained and shabby lan boots and shoes can he renovated and made to appear like pat-
ent leather by cleaning with a cloth' dipped in benzine and then applying with a fine brush a coating of motorhood dressing. After two days give a second coat and allow to harden for a few days.
Waste Not. —When making pear, ginger, cfliince, honey or melon jam, do not throw away the skins and pips. Place these in a stewing pan with enough water to cover. Boil tender, then add the strained liquid to the jam. The peel and pips contain all the jellying properties and also add to the flavour of the preserve.
Dainty Cake Cover, —A dainty cover for keeping flies off cakes may be inexpensively made from a wire electrie light shade covered with mosquito net. The wire may be covered with silver of gold paint, and the net may be dyed any shade to suit the teaset. Decorate with home-made flowers and fruit made from pieces of silk or brightlycoloured material.
