ROTOTUNA.

Church Matters. On Tuesday evening, the Rolotuna Church was well filled, when a meeting of a two-fold nature was held — i.e., to do honour to Mr C. HoldaWay, who, owing to advancing years, has severed his connection with the Sunday school staff, and to collect money for the benefit of the orphanages of the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches. The Rev. F. E. Leadley occupied the chair. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Leadley, Misses Thomas, Morgan, C. Clements and Master Morgan. The evening was opened by the singing of the Christmas hymn, "Christians, Awake, Salute the Happy Morn,"

led by a children's choir, The programme continued as follows: Duct. " Jcsu, Lover of My Soul," Misses Tui and Winnie Borman; solo, Mrs Morgan; recitation, "The Turkey's Lament," Miss Dorothy Clements; duet, " I heard Lhn Voice," Mrs Lcadlcy and Miss Thomas; recitation, "Christmas Kvo Love Story," Mrs A. 11. Clement; " March of Ihe Flowers," Miss Gladys Gate and others; solo, "Love That Wilt not Del Me Go," Miss Morgan; recitation, " Our First Quarrel," Mrs .T. Hayncs; carol, "Christmas Morning," young people; duet, " "Pis Jesus," Mrs and Miss Morgan; solo, "Across the Blue Sea," Mr N. Stewart; anthem, " Christmas Jubilee," young people; duct, " Christ's Natal Day," Misses Koller and Clements; hymn, "Dark, the Herald Angels Sing." Speeches of appreciation with regard to the good work done by Mr Holdaway, sen., in church, Bible class and Sunday school were, made by Rev. F. K. Lcadlcy, Rev. R. Morgan, Mr P. Matheson, Mr F. W. Thomas, and Mill. Clement, the last-named calling on Miss May Thompson to make a presentation.

Miss Thompson, in a few wellchosen words, asked Mr Holdaway to accept as a token of appreciation and love a handsome engraved walkingstick and silk muffler.

Mr Holdaway, who was visibly affected, acknowledged the gift, and the words of appreciation, and gave some interesting reminiscences of his long and varied experiences of bunday school and bible class work, which included a Chinese class. Revs. F. E. Lcadlcy and it. Morgan briefly outlined the work being successfully carried out in connection with n«cdy orphans, in their respective churches, and slressed the need for financial support. A collection was taken amounting to £'i Ss, which sum was equally divided between the Presbyterian and Methodist orphanage work.

Three of our local scholars have had the misfortune, tj sustain injuries recently. Miriam Blackmore, who broke her arm through a fall from a tree, is making a good recovery. Bertie Bridson, who also fell from a free and sustained a fractured skull, is in the Wailcato Hospital, where, his condition is reported to be satisfactory. Vivian Graham cut his finger severely with a sickle, necessitating being stitched by the doctor.
