BOOTLEGGERS' WAR.
BATTLES IN ILLINOIS. VOLLEYS IN IIERRIN STREET. (Australian and N.Z. Coble Assn.) NEW YORK, November 7. Guns arc blazing again at Hcrrin, Illinois, where the war between rival bootlegging gangs who seek to control the illicit liquor traJUc has broken out afresh a Her a temporary lull. The latest victims of the warfare, in which at least 12 men have been killed, are Mr Stone, Mayor of an adjacent town, and another citizen. They were shot down while they were standing in a street by volleys fired at close range from rifles and machineguns in the hands of gangsters. The murderers escaped in motorcars. Mr Stone was recently exonerated on the grounds of self-defence after having killed the local deputy sheriff in an encounter between them a year ago. Law-abiding citizens of Herrin have asked the Federal Government to send large forces of armed prohibition officers to rid the countryside of the rival bootlegging factions.
