SWEDISH BUTTER BOXES.
UNFAVOURABLE REPORT. DISTINCTLY RESINOUS. The ease against Swedish spruce butter boxes is summed up in the following paragraph from the annual report of the New Zealand Dairy Producers’ Board: "While the evidence docs not warrant a general condemnation, it is clear that some Swedish boxes have been distinctly resinous.” The report adds that these resinous boxes "should not have been dispatched from the mill in the first place, but, having been so, should have been discarded by the factory. To adequately safeguard tho reputation of our butter, all Swedish boxes should be paraffin waxed, or should have a waxed lining in addition to stout parchment paper. It should be clear to factories that any deterioration arising from this cause under the marketing policy of the board next season, must be, surcharged to the factory responsible for it.” White pine makes superior boxes for butter, but price considerations leave Swedish spruce in the running, subject to safeguards.
