NO DOUBTFUL TACTICS.
METHODS OF THE POLICE. ACTION 13V THE COMMISSIONER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Commissioner of Police, Mr W. 13. Mellveney, recently issued the following circular: “It having come to my knowclcdge that some members of Ihe force appear to consider it justifiable to have recourse to deliberate misrepresentation for the purpose of obtaining the confidence of suspected offenders and inducing them by deceit to contravene the law, 1 desire it to be thoroughly understood that not under any circumstances shall i countenance or suffer dishonourable actions by the police, nor allow honesty io be cast aside under the plea of expediency. “ Untruthfulness is the greatest disqualification for the police service. Truthfulness, absolute honesty, straightforwardness, manliness, and honour, if practiced by the police in the execution of Ihoir duties, will always command respect and approbation, while mean and contemptible tactics will receive, condemnation. 1 cannot too deeply impress it upon all ranks that however anxious lltie department may be for Hie detection of offenders even the greatest delinquents should not be brought to jusliee lay unjustifiable methods.”
