THE DEER MENACE.

REMOVAL OF PROTECTION. GOVERNMENT'S DECISION. WELLINGTON, Monday. To curb the increased numbers of deer in New Zealand and the considerable damage done by those animals to the pastuies and forest areas, the Government has decided to remove the protection on all deer, excepting moose and Wapiti at the close of the next dvcr-stalking season unless it can be shown by the Acclimatisation Societies cf the different districts that they are adequately coping with the deer menace.

It has been suggested to the acclimatisation societies thai they should expend all Ihe moneys received from deer and opossum licenses in thinning out deer.

Tho payment of bonuses in those districts where protection has already been removed will be continued.
