These lamps will be alight from dusk tiil midnight, and will light up the shop front and also the full width of the footpath. He asked for the permission of the Council to erect the lamps. Granted, the Mayor remarking that the scheme was a borough improvement. A good deal of discussion arose over the proposal of a firm to erect two petrol bowsers in front of its garage, at the corner of Alexandra and Mutu Streets. An excavation had been mode to instal a lank, hut as it would bo to close to the corner (thus blocking visibility) the Works Committee asked that the bowser he placed further from the corner.
The chairman of the Works Committee, Councillor B. McGcchie, mov.d that the desired permission be granted, on the specifications tabled. Counccllor North seconded. Carried.
The big redwood tree on a small section at the corner of Alexandra and Mutu Street was reported to be dangerous, and Councillor McCarroll gave notice to move at next meeting that the tree be sold for removal. Englnoer's Report. The engineer reported on the work done. The proposal that there should be a footway on the north side of Mahoe Street from Arawata Street to the saicyards was considered by the Committee on the ground and the engineer was instructed to set the matter down for consideration in the cslmates as soon as funds arc available. The matter of providing a proper plan of the cemctary area and of safe and convenient access to the cemetery and the the allotments inside the cemetery has been receiving attention. On Monday, 24th, the chairman and the borough engineer visited the junction of Pakura Street to study the flood conditions at Mr Weatherill's corner. A plan was made and the matter reported to the committee. The town clerk is laying all records on the table. The classification of the streets In the borough for heavy traffic has received consideration.
The county engineer was interviewed to find what steps the County proposes to lake as it is desired that our rules should harmonise as much as possible with theirs. Seeing that the Borough is surrounded by the County and that a classification made by the County will effectively protect our streets against all traffic from the outside it would seem that there need be no urgency in classifying our streets. Tlie County is only allowing class four. This is a sound arrangement and simple in the working. No harm will come to our streets from this classification. If our heavy vehicles should give trouble the classification of our streets could then 1 e laken in hand. The report was adopted.
