At 2 o’clock on Sunday morning a disastrous fire broke out in Riddell’s billiard room at Matierc, spreading to Gordon’s drapery shop and grocery on one side, and a bakery and tearooms on tho other side. The blaze spread from there to H. Piercy’s bootmaker’s shop, an unoccupied "butcher's shop, and an unoccupied blacksmith’s shop, all of which were destroyed. Nothing was saved except the contents of the bakery and bootmaker’s shop. Two motor cars and a motor lorry were also saved. A motor cycle was destroyed. The origin of the fire is unknown. The insurances are not available.
