AUSTRALIAN STRIKES.
<, OBDURATE DRIVERS. MINERS’ PROPOSALS REJECTED. POSITION BECOMING ACUTE. (United Press Association.) (Received Juno 5, 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 5. The leaders of the striking enginedrivers and firemen rejected a proposal of the miners for a compulsory conference. The strike has been in progress for a month, and the position of the miners is becoming more acute. While they arc depending upon Government assistance, the strikers arc securing most of their financial support from their fellow-meinbcrs of their organisation, who are not employed in the coal mines, and who are levied upon from 10s to 35s weekly. The number of strikers is about 1000, but there arc 12,000 enginedrivers engaged in other pursuits than the mines. The Trades and Labour Council appointed a deputation to wait on Mr Lang, tbo State Premier, when lie returns from his holiday, and ask him to intervene in an endeavour to effect a settlement.
