KEREONE ROADING.

MEETING OF SETTLERS. At, a meeting of Kcrcono settlers in the Kereonc Hall to consider the proposed Kcrcono roading scheme there was a fair attendance, Mr .T. C. McIntyre occupied the chair. Mr W. H. Lowry (Piako County chairman and representative for Kiwitahi riding), Mr W. McLean (Walton riding), and the county engineer, Mr W. J. Gibbs, were also present. It was decided from the start that the settlers were by no means unanimous as to the manner in which the work was to be carried out and the chairman at times had a good deal of difficulty in restraining some of the speakers from speaking 100 forcibly and 100 often. The engineer had submitted three schemes for the consideration of the meeting and not one of them met with anything like general approval. Mr Lowry urged the meeting if possible to be unanimous. If they went on with different schemes they would have more difficulty in getting a Government subsidy and probably not as much. He wanted the matter settled that day, as the engineer was making his estimates for the Government grants within a fortnight. The council would try to get as large a subsidy as possible, £2 for £1 had been obtained in other places and there was no reason why Korcone should not get the same, lie feared that if (lie settlers were not unanimous and sent in separate petitions Ilia', the Council would turn them down. Mr Ramsay moved that those settlers at Ids end go on with their own scheme. Mr Lowry was asked by Mr Anderson if the whole Council would go to Kereonc to view the area. He replied that they could not; they had a responsible officer to advise them. It was suggested that a committee of five from each area should meet and sec if they could not come to some arrangement, but this was not agreed to, several settlers saying that they would not agree to delegate their powers to five men. After some further discussion it was decided to hold another meeting of settlers to again discuss the matter. •Engineer’s Schemes.
