MORRINSVILLE.

Tho Band. The first meeting of the finance committee of the newly-formed Morrinsvillc Municipal Band was held on Tuesday evening. Mr B. Glapham was elected to tho chair, and Mr Cottingham was appointed secretary. The following members were appointed to sign cheques and open an account at the Bank of New Zealand: Messrs McPherson, Cottingham and Gifford. Messrs Gifford, Humphries, McPherson and Cottingham were appointed canvassers to raise funds. It was decided to obtain quotations for second-hand instruments from the Defence Department and other quarters. Police Court. Before Messrs C. Jd- Gummer and W. H. Milliken, J'sJP. .on Friday morning a well-known resident of Morrinsville, whose name was ordered to be suppressed, was charged that on the previous evening he was in charge of a motor car while in a state of intoxication. The police applied for an adjournment, as the accused had only been arrested late the previous evening and they had not got their witnesses present. Mr A. Needham, who appeared for accused, objected to an adjournment on the grounds that accused had been notified the previous evening that the case would not be adjourned and his witnesses were all present. Constable Jackson said that it was possible other charges would be brought. The case was in connection with a collision that occurred on the Hamilton Road the previous evening, and he wanted time to make further enquiries. The Bench expressed tho opinion that the case should be heard before a magistrate and not before justices who were local residents. The adjournment was granted, and probably the case will be further adjourned until the 15th inst., to he tried by ttie magistrate. Bail was fixed at £2O on accused’s own recognisance.
