MUSIC AND ELOCUTION.

MASTERTON COMPETITIONS. Mr Farquhar Young, for a great number of years a well-known singer and elocutionist, and at present elocution master at St. Andrew's Gollcse, Christchurch, returned last week from Masterton, where he judged me elocutionary section at the recent Wairarapa competitions. Interviewed by a reporter, Mr Young gave a few of his impressions in regard lo the competitions: "Entries for the elocutionary section last year were rather poor," said Mr Young, "but this year very encouraging entries were'received for the first time, competitors coming from Wellington, Napier, and Wanganul. The standard attained in this section was most satisfactory. The speeches and debates were also good, but 1 would bespeak for more entries in these departments at, future competitions."

Mr Young said that the competitions were wonderfully managed, and reflected the greatest credit upon the officials responsible. "The children's section in the elocutionary class was especially interesting," said Mr Young, "and the majority of the young competitors reached an exceptionally good standard. A noticeable and most pleasing feature was that these young competitors did not ap- the adults, but contributed their items with true childish simplicity."
