A.R.C. WINTER MEETING

FIRST DAY AT ELLERSLIE. G.N. HURDLES AND CORNWALL. GOOD FIELDS FOR THURSDAY. The Auokland Racing Club's Winter Meeting will open at Ellerslic to-mor-row and be continued on Saturday and Monday. To the. majority of the sporting fraternity the Great Northern Jr, the most popular meeting of the season at provincial headqquarters and. with the fine weather promisod for the coming occasion, the Club can be assured of very prominent patronage. The feature of to-morrows programme will be the Great Northern Hurdles contest and the race for the Cornwall Handicap, while on Saturday the Great Northern Steeplechase will be the all-absorbing item of interest. It can confidently be expected that the patronage from the Waikato to the coming meeting will be, large. A special train will leave Hamilton tomorrow at 7.2 a.m., and will return after the last race. JERVOIS HANDICAP, one mile. First Division.

This event will open the eight-race programme for the day. Pegaway, Rowley and Golden Krisfc are likely to fce in some demand it they are sadIdled up for duty in the mile race.

GREEN LANE STEEPLECHASE, Of £SOO. About 21 mites.

\ smaller field is down for engagement in this cross-country event. Kendal will be entitled to the majority Of support, while Sansaiino and Pendennls have been over the country previously.

JERVOIS HANDICAP, one mile, Second Division.

Qulnooma has had a busy programme since the New Year, but has done well In racing and can be expected to see out the distance. Pmon has not raced for some time but this may not be too much against the local representative. Of the lot lower down Nucleus or Lomint may proxe the most effective.

There is ample material In this field to make the race over the battens productive of xvell-spread speculation, and, maybe, unlocked for results. West Abbey and Glenotus may go xxe in this company over the battens, but Rangatahi performed well enough at Wanganui to select hhn as useful on the business, and Glenidle may also come in for some support.

The class hurdlers will next he seen In action over the two and a-half mile journey for xvhicii a good sized field of batten performers xvill ho despatched on the important mission. At the time of writing Sir Roseberry was under a cloud and an unlikely starter xvhicii xvill be a disappointment to numerous admirers. Everything ip the field is sure to be in greater or less demand and the most fruitful results xvill not be easy to determine. Gaze, Archibald and Crown Coin arc likely to be among the candidates claiming prominent attention xvhen selections have been made.

CORNWALL HANDICAP, or £IOOO. il miles.

The principal fiat event of the day’s card, the Cornwall Handicap, xvill be decided over ten furlongs, in which there xvill lie a field of good quality, and on form, sufficient warranty for keen speculation. When Hie real business is enquired for, Nippy, Tanadees and Degage may be among Hie candidates equal lo the occasion. hunt club hurdles. or £SOO. 2 miles.

Thu presence of a big field in this event will not make the task any easier for those who are concerned. A surprise need not be unexpected in such circumstances, but Mangahewa, Stonewall or Dlmlight may be noted.

MEMBERS’ HANDICAP, Of £OSO. 0 fur.

A line Held of sprinters is scheduled to appear in this event, with which the programme will close to-morrow. Chairman or Scrang, on which ever Ihc stable relies, is likely to have a good following. Lc Choucas should go well, while Kingsilcld is among ihc light weighted ones with speed. SECOND DAY.

TRAINING NOTES. THE GOING AT ELLERSLIE. (By Telegraph.—Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, Tuesday. No. 1 grass track at Ellcrslic was open for fast work this morning, and produced good going. Sleepy Sol and Namutere were together over live furlongs in 1.7 1-5. Judge’s Box and Lord Bruce finished as named at the end of four furlongs in 5-iJscc. Pavo alone ran a similar distance in 1.8 1-5. Charlady and Norma Talmadge were together at the end of six furlongs in 1.22 3-5. Maveelish went five furlongs in 1.10 1-5, Bay Dighton taking 1.8 1-5. Queen Emerald was slightly in advance of-Marble Glass over half a mile in 54sec. After breakfast Zaragoza did six furlongs in 1.23, the last five taking 1.8 4-5. Nippy, Town Bank, and Gala Day ran a round in 2.0, Nippy being just a trifle in front at the finish.

Pelham and Uralla were about on terms over live furlongs, the last four taking 55scc.

Joy Ride and Just Quietly ran live furlongs in 1.9 3-5. Princess Ronnie and Lomint were together in front of Barometer at the end of six furlongs in 1.22. Eerie and Catcall ran seven furlongs in 1.37 3-5, and Blue Sky and Archeno were on terms over six furlongs in 1.24 3-5. Sulla and a companion covered six furlongs in 1.27. Wenday was in front of Piton and Star Comet at the end of six furlongs in 1.23 3-5.

Muscari ilnishcd in front of Passionate over six furlongs in 1.24. There was little between Serang and Chairman at the finish of live furlongs in 1.8 1-5. Tresham and Nucleus were together over six furlongs in 1.24 3-5. Hoariri was in front of Le Choucas over half a mile in 51 1-5., Dobbin alone taking 53 3-ssec. Ballvnoy was sprinted over a few furlongs, the last two taking 29 1-5 Llewellyn, Crown Coin, and Glenotus went a round in 2.7, and Pompey was just a shade in front of Ihuisbi over five furlongs in 1.8 1-5. King Comet and Killute went six furlongs in 1.27 2-5, while Danae and Master Doon ran a similar distance in 1.21 3-5. Quincoma and Quinvardia did four furlongs in 57sec., Odd Sox and Fcstina Lentc taking 53 3-sscc. Dlmlight and Bizarro ran the last four furlongs of their work in 59sec, while King Merv finished in front of Quinctle over half a mile in Bowman ran half a mile in 52 1-5 sec., and Queen Comet, Gay Comet aiid Golden Krist ran six furlongs in 1.27 2-5. , Polonette and Holvmond ran a round in 2.3 4-5. Tanadees was given work over a round, but was not timed. Zircon and Income were given strong work over a couple of rounds, running home the last four furlongs in 57 4-j sec. Over the Hurdles. The jumper Sansalino finished in front of Gambler’s Gold over the fences on the flat including the sod wall, double and stonewall. Pittsworlh, .Kendal, Prince Rufus, Tula and Birkenella were given a roum over big country. Pittsworlh led till the top of the straight, where lie was pulled off on the sand and given rtronS work. Kendal finished n iront of Prince Rufus, with Birkenella next, Tuki having crashed into the second fence of the double and fallen. Dm rider, P. Mcßrcarty, sustained a broken collarbone. Greekson was tried alone over the big fences, but after jumping the sod wall water jump and stonewall he refused at the fence near the mile post and could not be persuaded to go over it In company with Pendcnnis am Pcndavics he started over the obstacle again, but Pendavis refused at the first fence of the double and unseated his rider, Williams, who got a shaking. Greekson again stopped at the fltst fence on the hill and Pcndcnn.sflmslied alone. Afterwards he acted as schoolmaster to Pcndavics, who had again refused to jump the first fence of the double. However, he negoliaied the double and the stonewall. Peter Ropa and Glenidle went over four schooling hurdles in the centre of the course and both went fairly wcl . Archibald, Gaze, Landlord and Black Cruiser were sent over a round of the hurdles erected on the outside of the course proper. Gaze fell at the second, and Black Cruiser and Archibald, who had carried on the running, were together till the last hurdle, where Archil bajtf came to grief. Black Cruiser finished well ahead of Landlord, the lime from hurdle lo hurdle being 2.12 i-3sces. Gaze was remounted, hut fell at I lie last, and injured one of his front legs. He was very lame when he walked away, and il looked as 1 hough il would lake him all his time (o get riglil again before the meeting.

Bright Light and Mahgloire finished in front of Tapuhi and Kamehameha in a similar task. Peter Amans and Royal Fame were sent over five hurdles on the course proper, but Royal Fame fell at the second and Peter Amans completed the journey without mishap. Royal Fame was remounted and jumped the remaining obstacles alright. Scot Free was too good for Brushwood Boy and Fair Abbey over six hurdles in the centre of tile course, while Star of the East impressed with the way lie heat Uangiialii over four schooling hurdles. Flowing Bowl and Mangapiko were sent over four hurdles, Mangapiko falling at the last. Ulva’s Isle jumped four hurdles. Notes.

A. McCormac will ride Dobbin, Sehoor, and Fcslina Lcnte, and S. Henderson will ride Lomint, Peter Rosa, Kendal, Merry Ann and Brushwood Boy at the A.R.C. meeting. M. J. Carroll has arrived with Greekson and Pinon, while Tall Timber has also reached Ellcrslie and worked on the sand this morning.
