CHINESE TROUBLE.
SHANGHAI QUIET. STRIKE A DISMAL FAILURE. FOREIGNERS MOLESTED. (Australian and N.Z. Press Assn.) (Received $.15 a.m.) SHANGHAI, May 31. The whole city is quiet. The police anticipate no further serious disorder. The rioting appears to have been general throughout the city, but in every case the police were able to control it without using firearms. The three day's strike called by the Labour and Student's Union proved a dismal failure. The shops are all open and the majority of the labourers are working. Many foreigners were molested at night, stoned and beaten. Some foreigners fired shots in the air or into the ground to disperse the mobs.
