BEAM WIRELESS.
DELAY IN INSTALLATION GREAT TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES. TELEPHONIC SECRECY. LONDON, May 30. It is understood there is little chance of the Australian beam wireless being in operation before four or five months, because considerable technical difficulties remain to be surmounted. Canada will be able to operate at the end of July. This will afford a criterion of the prospects of the Australian service. It is suggested iu some quarters that sufficient plant should be Installed at Grimsby and Skegness to permit a single aerial for short wave experiments with Australia as a preliminary to the beam service. In this connection it is interesting to recall that the Government commercial service is going out nightly from the Dollis Ilill experimental station which cost a mere bagatelle. Using one kilowatt and 17 metres ils messages arc picked up in China, Australia and New Zealand. Experts hold out the slenderest hope of the beam station being adapted to telephony, because • telephonic short waves produce the most pronounced mutilation compared with the long waves used in the Rugby tests. Experiments are in progress at the latter station to secure complete telephonic secrecy and the progress so far has been most promising.
