DRAUGHTS CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. FOSTERING OF LOCAL INTEREST. Tlie annual meeting of the Hamilton Draughts Club was held in the Library on Saturday evening. There was a fair attendance of members. Ways and means were discussed as to the best method of fostering local interest in the game, and it was resolved to hold a tourney among the members at an early date. Mr D. Calderwood, ex-champion of New Zealand, kindly consented to give an exhibition of simultaneous play at the club-room in the local Library on Saturday, June 12, when the club will donate a trophy to the first player to obtain a win from him. It is hoped that such an exhibition will be the means of drawing draughts players and intending players together for a pleasant winter session. DRAINAGE BOARDS. WAITOA. Tiie Waitoa ratepayers have decided on a progressive policy. Mr< Walters, the chairman, explained that it. had been agreed that after the Waitoa River had been dredged to the junction of the Ohine, the Board was to prepare a schedule of the cost of an internal drainage scheme. The Board, had been committed to the Land Drainage Department for £1215 the Board’s portion of the cost of dredging the Waitoa River to the Ohine. This work was merely to get away the waters from the flooded areas of the Ohine basin, and did not includa improvements to the Ohine Creek and subsidiary drains. The central area classification was now £03,787 A land, £47,775 B land, and £32,025 C land. The acreages were 39441 A, 2931 B, and 1907 C. The loan totals arc £SIOO, the annual interest being Jd on A, 5-8 d on B and 1-Sd on C. There is also a charge of 7 7-8 d per acre. The annual cost is 11/S per acre on the past loan. In addition there is a general rate of 13d on A, 1 3-8 d on b; and Id on C. The present total rate is 2/7 3-8 d per acre apportioned over A, B, and C together. In the loan proposal set out, in which the Board is committed to £1215, a limited area is pledged as security. This docs not include the inlernal scheme. The rale would bo 13/lGth of a penny on A, 8/lGtlis of a penny on B, and 3/lGth of a penny on C in the £. The annual charge would be Old. The capital cost per acre would "be 10s —on the combined scheme the rate would be 15/1 Gths of a penny on A, 10/lGths on B, and 5/1 Gths on C. The re-classiflcatio.n would alter the position considerably. The scheme had been placed before a meeting of ratepayers and approved. ELSTOW. At a meeting of the Elstow Drainage Board on Saturday there were present Messrs W. J. Andrews (chairman), N. W. Dunn, M. 11. Wynyard, M. A. Carter, N. T. Dale, A. Davey, P. A. Swney. Mr Wynyard reported on an interview he had with Mr Nosworthy, acting-Minister of Finance, in connection with the Waitoa River dredging loan.- —Mr Wynyard was instructed to write Mr Nosworthy, explaining the position morn fully and signifying the Board's willingness to proceed with tin; work provided they had the assurance tiiat the money would lie forthcoming from Ihe Slate Advances Office as soon as funds arc available. Mr Anderson reported that lie had interviewed the Prime Minister and Minister of Lands at Pacroa. Both Ministers.had promised to give the Board’s request serious consideration, and stated Lhe subsidy would also be discussed, but all the Board could expect would be £1 in £3, instead of £1 for £l.—The report was adopted.

II was reported that the Awaitl drains had been cleaned by the settlers at no cost to the Board. On the motfon of Messrs Carter and Swney it was agreed that consideration o"r the whole matter of rating of Awaiti area be deferred until the agreement with the Crown is before the Board.

Mr Copewoll informed the Board that portions of his drain had subsided. —The Board agreed lhat the engineer attend to same. The Ellham Drainage Board invited the Board to send a representative to attend a conference to he held in Wellington on June 3 Wynward to represent the Board. It was decided to levy 10 per cent, on all unpaid rates. The engineer was instructed in attend lo Ihe matter of fluming the balance of Burton's outlet drain.
