DUTY ON MAIZE.

NO CHANCE OF REMOVAL. "There is not the slightest intention lo alter the duty on maize," said the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon- O. J. Hawkcn) to a deputation which waited upon him on his Bay of Plenty tour. It was stated that the Bay of Plenty could grow enough maize to "Hood New Zealand," but the irregularity of prices nad prevented it from being grown as it should. They either wanted the retention of the duty or else a subsidy, and asked the Minister to do as much for maize as the Government had done for wheat: Mr Hawkcn staled that if the New Zealand maize crops diminished, then the question of duty on the imported article must be reconsidered, but if the industry increased, as it had every reason lo do. then the duty would, not, be interfered with.
