DAIRY PRODUCE CONTROL,

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I would like' to issue a note of warning to your farmer readers of what they are up against in the specuLitive clement that is opposing control of marketing butter. A fortnight ago there was a big howl from Wellington about some butter losing weight that was held up by the Control Board. I suggested in a letter Ao the press that the object of the scire was to gain the sympathy of the uninitiated and belittle the Control Board, also that there would be a slight shrinkage under any circumstances, and the producer provided far it bv allowing Goz overweight in every box" of butter. This brought correspondence in opposition from the so-called Welfare League. One wo-id imagine that the Welfare League was a benevolent society, out to help an industry, not impose on it. Do not for a minute think this league is the harmless concern its name would imply. Among recent cables there was a howl about butter control. It is easily guessed who inspired this report also. Something similar a short time ago even hinted at financial reialiation when the Dominion went on the London market for the next loan. All this simply amounts to holding a bludgeon over our heads and threatening us with dire results if \ e do not give the speculator his cut out ot an hard-earned produce. His picking amounts to such an enormous consideration that he is prepared to finance secret organisatioas and supply fighting funds to prevent them being taken away from him, all of which is paid for by the dairy farmer. Yes! and in some cases by women and children working long hours for a few pence per hour. One marvels at our patriotism.—l am, etc., Y. L. JACKSON. Ngaruawahia.

(Wc have made some excisions from the foregoing letter, as they referred to letters and articles that appeared in other journals, the criticism of which should have been sent to the papers concerned. —Ed. W.T.j
