Seed merchants report that the drv spell has permitted a late burn Of bush clearings. Orders for fertilisers and seed have been received. Wheat.—Ample stocks in store keep the price of fowl wheat at 8s 6d ex store, but a steady advance is taking place in Australia, and if tin's is maintained it will soon be reflected here. Oats. —The market is decidedly weaker in the South. This is not reflected here, as most merchants arc working on Canadian, which were lower than Southern untitlho recent reduction. The latter can now be imported to sell at 5s Gd, ex store, and regular quantities will be brought up the coast to follow the Canadian. Bran and Pollard.—Both arc in keen demand, with Australian importations supplementing the local milling. Dairy farmers will require a good deal of bran during the winter, so that continued importations will have to take place, unless arrangements are made for curtailing the importation of flour by differentiating in the customs duty on wheat and flour. With the duly the same on each, a good deal is being imported and that means less bran and pollard manufactured in NewZealand. Maize. —Merchants are working from hand to mouth until the South African maize arrives. Any arriving from the coast realises 7s 4d on the wharf in wholesale lines. Grass Seed. —Some varieties are very firm, but others have slackened, so that on the average grass mixtures have about'maintained former prices. Potatoes. —-There are ample quantities arriving from Pukckohe, but importation from the South cannot be much longer delayed. As Canterbury prices have eased a little since the Australian demand fell off it is likely that they con be landed to sell at the small margin over local which they ; usually realise. In the meantime good quality local are selling at recent rates. Onions. —The few that .arc left.at Pukekohc arc now firmly held by those farmers who arc not afraid of any deterioration in quality, and the local price is 10s, ex store.
