CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MEETING AT PUTARURU. At the monthly meeting of the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce the following members were present:— Messrs F. C. Barnclt (chairman), ,T. W Barr Brown, A. Cosslctt, A. C. Thompson, A R. Vospcr, C. C. Neal, C Snell, .1. W. V. Scotl, W. P. Benton, G. G. Griffiths, and A. 11. Dukcson, jun. (secretary). A discussion on the proposed now police station revealed the fact that some local builders considered that they had been so humbugged in the past by the department that they did not bother to tender in reply lo the recent advertisement for fresh tenders. H w as decided to write to the Minister for Justice asking for information, and also to communicate with Mr Hockly on the matter. Mr Griffiths pointed out the urgent need for further lights in tho town, and after discussion it was decided to apply to the County Council, asking that extra lights be provided at the corner of Kensington and Marchant Streets, at the intersection of Duke and Princes Streets, by the old factory corner, at the corner of Margaret Street and the Great South Road, in Arapuni Road, and the end of Tauno Road near the railway cottages. It was decided to write to Mr E. Jones, of the New Zealand Perpetual Forests, to address the Chamber- on tree-planting. The secretary reporteu that he had secured a promise from Mr S. J. Parker lo address members on a subject of interest. Mr S. C. Snell' asked what the Chamber had done in regard to obtaining a dump for the town. At present the town was in the. peculiar position of having much rubbish and no dump. He urged that a dump be provided, and that the County Council be approached in the matter. An explanation was given re the progress of what had been done to date, and it was decided that the secretary approach Mr J. R. O. Lochhead and ascertain what had been done by the Domain Board and then lo write to the County Council on the matter. Mr Snell urged that the Council be approached in regard to the pond in Princes Street. At the moment it was a plague spot, and a disgrace to the town. —it was decided that urgent representations be made to the Council, asking for filling lo be commenced at an early date. Mr Cosslctt suggested that the Walhcu Bridge, on the main HamiltonTaupo road, needed attention. Two accidents had occurred during the past week, and tho rails were down. Mr Barnett pointed out that scrub on the corner obscured the view, and it would improve matters if it was cleared. —It was decided to draw the attention of the County Council to the matter.
