MEETING OF MEMBERS. IMPORTANT BUSINESS. A general meeting of members held on the Show Grounds, Christchurch, Thursday, 12th November, was exceptionally well attended by members from all parts of the Dominion. Mr. W. E. A. Gill (president) was in the chair. Mr. D. Dickie, Wellington, was appointed treasurer of the Association. The president congratulated the Canterbury members of the Association on their efforts to make the Royal Show such a fine Friesian exhibition. It was a great show, and he specially congratulated the Canterbury branch on winning the Provincial Group Friesian Campionship. The thanks of the Friesian Association were particularly due to those breeders who had brought their animals from Auckland and from Southland. On the motion of Messrs. W. E. A. Gill and 11. J. Marchant," it was resolved to congratulate the Friesian judge on ihe very successful manner in which he had carried out his duties. Mr. T. A. Stewart, of Riccarton. brought forward the question of making compulsory the testing of all dairy cattle for tuberculosis. After discussion, the matter was referred to the Council for further consideration. On the suggestion of Mr. John L, Boyds, of Christchurch, it was resolved to recommend the Canterbury A. & P. Association to make certain improvements in the cattle pavilions, particularly with regard to the feeding troughs, hitching rings, and partitions. Mr. R. Newell, Rangiora, urged that special advertising matter should be prepared to bring before dairyfarmers the desirability of using purebred pedigree Friesian bulls. After considerable discussion, in which strong support was given to the proposal, the matter was referred to the Council for action. Council Meeting. A meeting of the Council was held on the Show Grounds, Christchurch. on Thursday, 12th November. Present: Messrs. W. E. A. Gill, Wellington (president), E. G. Banks (Matamata), I). Dickie (Wellington), W. D. Hunt (Wellington), E. M. North (Omimi, Otagoj, 11. E. Johnson (Hawera), H. J. Marchant (Stratford), Major R. A. Wilson (Marton), J. McAnulty (Winchmore, Ashburton), and the secretary, J. P. Kalaugher. Apologies for "absence were received from Messrs. .Tas. Hart (Tatuanui, Waikato) and J. H. Wi'son (Matamata). Mr. E. H. Dobson. Te Aroha, wrote slating that he had inadvertently transposed the name of two females on their registration forms. It was resolved on receipt of a statutory declaration to make the alterations as requested. Official Organ:—lt was resolved to appoint-'The Dairyfarmer" (Hamilton) and the "N.Z. Farmer" (Auckland), as joint official organs of the Association; every member to be supplied free of charge with a free copy of "Tho Dairyfarmer."

Calf Marking:—Mr. John I. Royds, Christchurch wrote stating that for identification of calves, particularly in large herds, ho had found the card system, very useful. Eacli card had an outline of a calf on it, and on this diagram, the markings of the calf could be pencilled in. On the reverse side ihe date of birth, sex, sire and dam were written. This method was merely preliminary to the photographic record of each animal. Mr. E. C. Banks stated that he had found the metal numbered ear-tag very convenient and absolutely reliable. Immediately a calf was born a num'aered metal tag was affixed to the top part of the ear of the calf and a corresponding tag to the ear of the dam. Mr. W. J. Hodgson, Te Awamutu, wrote, re certificates of production Issued by herd testing ' associations. It was resolved to bring before tho Director of the Dairy Division the desirability of having the title "Certificates of Record" registered and reserved exclusively for tho use of purebred pedigree dairy, cattle. ' . The secretary, reported that new branches of the Association had been formed in Rodney County (Auckland) and in the Wairarapa district. It was resolved '.hat the Wairarapa district should be that part lying east of the and Ruahine ranges, and should include Wellington city and the Hutt V;.lley. It was resolved that' the minimum amount, payable to a. branch by the head association should be five guineas for a year. . Intor-state- competitions.—lt was resolved to approve of the proposal to request the N.S.W. Agricultural Association to include an iuter-State Friesian group competition in the Sydney Royal Show schedule for Easter, 1926. Each group to consist of 2 males and 5 females. It was reported that a N.Z. team would be sent and that entries would probably come from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, and South Australia. It was resolved to convey the sympathy of the Association to Mrs. S. Clements, on the recent death of her husband, Ihe well-known Waikato Friesian breeder.
