The Waikato coalmines, and, indeed, the colamincs of New Zealand generally, are at present suffering their annual season of slackness. Summer weather always means a falling-off in the demand for coal for household requirements. The state of affairs this vear is described as about the same as that of last year, or perhaps a little worse. Several of the Waikato companies report that their mines are now working three to three and a-half days a week, and they are thus losing two working days weekly. The Glen Afton collieries have a more regular demand from the butter and cheese factories, and consequently they are not so much affected by seasonal fluctuations in demand. Over-production, caused through the operation of 100 many companies, is given as another reason for the slackening. Electrical development lias also had an effect on the demand.

Ripe tobacco is the fundamental reason for the wonderful popularity of Richmond Best Tobacco. Slowly cured in Nature's own way for two whole years, the result is a rich, ripe, mellow smoke which simply makes you dote on Richmond Best. Tobacconists sell it at 2s lOd a 4 oz plug, light or dark, or lOd per oz. cut.
