CONVERSAZIONE.

SIR E. AND LADY RUTHERFORD. INTERESTING EVENING. The Alexandra Hall was the scene of a conversazione of unusual interest on Wednesday, when Mr and Mrs Geo. Butherford and other relatives entertained a number of friends in honour of Sir Ernest and Lady Butherford, who are spending a few days in Hamilton en route to Wellington. The hall was beautifully decorated with streamers and shaded lights, and arranged as a drawing-room, bowls of lavender and pink standing on each table. The tuneful orchesira of Miss Ebbett supplied the music, and Mr Russell-Wood gave elocutionary items. Mr Eben Wilson gave a very feeling speech, in which he mentioned the great research work of the guest of the evening, who was from New Zeaand and an honour to his country.

Sir Ernest replied and thanked Mr Wilson for his kind expressions, and then briefly detailed some of the mysteries of radium.

A most enjoyable evening was spent and a dainty supper served before the adieux were made.

The hostesses were Mrs Geo. Rutherford, who wore a gown of saxe net. heavily scquinncd, over gold satin; Mrs H. G. Sergei, in green charmeuse, embroidered with gold, and Mrs Sfrieff, in black satin, with Oriental embroidery and a blue scarf. Mrs A. E. Butherford, of To Aroha, who was to have been the fourth hostess, was unfortunately unable to be present. KAIYIILTON TENNIS CLUB. OPENING OF COURTS. The official opening of the Hamilton Tennis Club was blessed with fine weather, although the high wind was somewhat a deterrent to the games. There was a good gathering of visitors and players, and they were welcomed by Mr C. A. Seymour, president of the club, who in a short speech detailed the work of the club, and its hopes for the coming year. He also presented the trophies won during last scasori.

A very nice tea was dispensed by the ladies' committee, and was welcomed by all. The courts, notwithstanding the wet spring, were in excellent order, and some good games were fought out during the afternoon. Among those present were: Mesdames Fabling, Seymour, Staples, Colom, McCracken, Burley, Greenhough, Mclndoe, Whineray, Stevenson, and Misses Schofield, Watson, Peart, Drake, Burnett, Newell, Stubbs, Edgcumbe, O'Callaghan, Cann (2), Itigginson, Sweeney, Spencer, Masters, Speedy, Burbusb, Daldy. Barton, Roach, Wilkes, Beaver, Whittaker, Rowsc, Wilson, Burley, Morris, Gardiner, NGARUA BACHELORS' BALL. The bachelors' ball, held last Tuesday in the Ngarua Hall, was a great success in every way, and much praise is due to the untiring efforts of the bachelors to make the evening an enjoyable one. The hall was prettily decorated with greenery, streamers and balloons, and, indeed, the scene was a gay one. Misses Kirk's orchestra (Wnharoa) supplied the excellent music, extras being played by Misses E. Vickcrs, P. and E. Carley and Mr E. Hayden (Waitoa). Messrs F. Smith and A. Vickers acted as M.C.'s.
