LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The control of the Mangaokewa Gorge Scenic Reserve has been vested in the Te Kuiti Borough Council.

A proclamation in the Gazette alters the boundaries of the Taumaruni and Ohura Counties, by incorporating the Kururau riding in the former county. The Cambridge Borough Council, by an Order-is-Council in the current Gazette, is authorised to provide and maintain a permanent war memorial on an area of land, being part of M.R. 575, Cambridge East. Portions of the Mangateparu Settlement roads in the Piako County arc gazetted as County roads; also the Te Kuiti-Taumarunui road, Taumarunui County. The Secretary to the Treasury acknowledges receipt of the following sums as conscience money:—£1 10s, forwarded to the Railway Department, Wellington; £l5, sent to the Land and Income Tax Department, Wellington; and £1 Bs, forwarded to the Collector of Customs, Christchurch. At the Magistrate’s Court, Ngaruawahia, a man named Sears was fined £2 and costs for defying the Health Department’s restrictions, and allowing a boy under 16 to attend the Ngaruawahia regatta. Amending regulations' are published in tlie Gazette under the Discharged Soldiers’ Settlement Act, 1015, setting forth the costs and fees payable for the preparation and completion of mortgages given by persons other than discharged soldiers under the Land Transfer Act and also under the Deeds Registration Act That the fact that their machines are undergoing a speed and reliability test does not excuse motorists or motor cyclists of disregarding borough by-laws was fully brought home to a motor cyclist, H. Miller, charged with driving at an excessive speed through Ngaruawahia during the course of a reliability run between Auckland and Rotorua. He was fined £lO and costs. Amongst other loans authorised by ills Excellency the Governor-General by Order-in-Gouncil are: Lower Mangapiko Drainage Board, widening, deepening, and improving drains, £250; Waitoa Drainage Board, drainage work in Puninga No. 3 special rating area, £5O; Te Awamutu Electric Power Board, electric works, £BOOO. The Town Clerk requests all persons who are qualified to vote at the borough elections, who found on Wednesday last that their names had been omitted from the roll, to immediately supply him with the necessary particulars, so that on future occasions they may exercise their rights. A gathering of Bay of Islands natives at Waimate North resolved that Ripi .Wihongi contest the Northern seat at the general elections as a Labour candidate. The resolutions dealing with native affairs carried at the annual conference of the Labour Party were read and approved. The new time-table for the express trains between Christchurch and Invercargill will come into operation on May 11. The schedule for the whole journey of 369 miles has been reduced by an hour and a-quarter, while that between Christchurch and Dunedin, 230 miles, has been reduced by three-quarters of an hour.

Two dead stags were discovered in a paddock at Tutaki (says the Nelson Mail). Investigation disclosed that they had met their death in an extraordinary way. They had evidently been fighting, and during the combat one of the beasts must have picked up a piece of loose fencing wire, and eventually both became locked in a death embrace. One deer was an 11pointer, and the other a 6-pointer. Mr Isaagr Lomas and his committee decided not to demand a recount of the Onehunga Mayoral election. Mr Lomas was given a lead of four votes on Wednesday evening, but a recount converted this into a minority of two. It was thought another recount would be made before a magistrate, but this will not now be necessary. A number of large bones, undoubtedly those of a moa, an interesting and rare find in this part of the Dominion, were discovered the other day near the Pirongia Mountain. Amongst the bones were the parts forming the complete framework of a leg, and as one bone is 27|in. long some idea of the giant size of the extinct bird can be obtained. The fossils, which have probably lain in the ground for centuries, were discovered in a bed of clay. Farmers had it impressed upon them at at Hawera yesterday that they must not operate milking plants without a certificate. Three farmers, W. Duggan, A. Lankow, and J. Robinson, were each charged with the offenco. The inspector of machinery said the Department had not been prosecuting in such cases, but in future it intended to do so. The three people prosecuted knew the requirements of the Act, perfectly well, and had had their machinery inspected and certificates issued for several years. A fine of £1 was imposed in each case with costs.
