THE SPORTSWOMAN.

HOW TO AVOiD SUNBURN. The woman with a full dance list must beware of getting burnt that unsightly red, which is often the result of only a day in the open air, playing tennis, or a week-end spent in the country, or of even a few hours motoring in an open car.

A Foolish Mistake.

So many cases of unsightly sunburn arise through allowing yourself to become sunburnt too quickly. Some women deliberately set out to get sunburnt, and they are surprised that their skin burns painfully, and peels in unsightly fashion afterwards. Your skin siways requires some protection from the combined influence of,sunshine and sea air, when you come under, it suddenly from the closer atmosphere of town.

The scarf fashion prevailing just now is really rather a boon, for a scarf, however light, does protect the neck and throat from sunburn, apd it is the neck which is especially liable, to get sun-scorched in an unbecoming way.

The long-sleeve fashion is just as helpful in preventing sunburnt arms, though, of course, long sleeves are often impracticable, so far as boating or playing tennis is concerned. In this case, before starting play or going on the river, protect the skin of your face, by rubbing some good cream well into the skin, wiping off carefully, and then powdering well. Simple Precautions. At night, after a day in the open air, rub glycerine and cucumber well into the skin of the face, neck, and arms.

If you take these few simple precautions, you may get' sunburnt, it is true, but the sunburn will be more gradual, and so it will not be unsightly.
