LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

SOUTH AUCKLAND VICTORIOUS. SYDNEY UNIVERSITY DEFEATED. AFTER GRUELLING GAME. The attendance at Steel Park yesterday for the League game between Sydney University touring ‘team and the South Auckland representatives was a highly gratifying one. The game proved a hard tussle throughout a little too gruelling in fact to allow of much brilliant play. The forwards in each team marie matters very willing with the result that the hacks on the opposing side were unable to show their prowess to the best advantage. Nevertheless the game on the whole was an interesting one, several glimpses of brilliant play, especially amongst Hie fast Australian hacks amusing enthusiasm of the crowd. The visitors hold the lead for some considerable time, but about half way through the second spell the local men annexed two tries successfully maintaining their advantage to the close. Wilson. THE FLAY. South Auckland kicked off. Early in fhc game the visitors led into the home territory and Beckham making a mistake with the ball University were nearly through. The half , with a good run saved the position but the visitors were awarded a free. Dufty returned the leather to mid-field where Johnson picked up and with a brilliant run along the line threatened danger until grassed by Barry. Play remained in neutral territory for the succeeding term until a good kick by Finn changed the venue to the South Auckland end. Two nice passing movements amongst the visiting hacks broke down through O’Brien and a rush initiated by Johnson relieved the tension on the local citadel. An effort by Paki took play into the University’s twenty-five but the visitors quickly cleared and the scene of operations changed suddenly to the South Auckland end where fumbling by Raynor nearly let the visitors through. A free was awarded Sydney and Ryan had a good but unsuccessful shot at goal. Following an up-field kick by Raynor, South Auckland had assumed the offensive and in the midst of a scramble on the fine Unwin was injured, having to retire. Lane replaced him and the visitors cleared from a free. Frcm a scrum at half-wav Lane secured possession smartly and the visiting backs wore nearly away in a nice passing movement which was spoilt, however, by knocking on. The students were attacking hard at this stage, a good break-avvay by Jackaways, who was allowed to go unsupported, eventually relieving the position. A spirited dash by Johnson spelt danger for the visitors hut a mark by Allman stemmed the tide of attack. A nice movement iniated by Barry at half-way and followed up by Moxon. who sent back to Barry, ended in the latter touching down at the comer. Ryan’s attempt to goal, a good one, failed. Paki picked up a good position, but was run out when a few yards of the line. South Auckland were awarded a free, Peckham failing by inches to materialise. Play swung hack to mild-feld and South Auckland were given an anxious time for the succeeding few minutes. Then was seen a beautiful piece of work between Finn ond Ryan who between them out-generalled the opposition, Finn scoring one -of Ihe best tries seen in Hamilton for some lime. liis kick narrowly failed, University .. .. ...... .. G South Auckland .... 0 Wilson led a South Auckland rush into the visitors’ territory where from a free Dufty had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Good following up by Funner brought South Auckland back to the attack. Unit was injured and was replaced by Mikli. From a scrum at mid-field Lane broke through, ran some distance and transferred to Flattery who was run out within a few inches of the bine. The half-time bell was sounded shortly later without additional score. The Second Half. Upon the resumption Dufty had replaced Rayncr at full-back, Raynor going on the wing with Paki as fiveeighths. An excellent line-kick by Allman put South Auckland on the defence. Offside play by the home team gave O’Brien a chance with ihe ball but the kick went wide. Both sides were fighting hard and whatever movements that were started were quickly broken up by the deadly tackling on both sides. South Auckland were awarded a free, Peckham again making the most of the opportunity—■ South Auckland .. 4 University . 6 From a scrum in the visitors’ twenty-five Peckham got the bail out smartly transferred to .lackaways who after a good run transferred when tackled to Paki who dived over between the, costs. Peckham added the extras— South Auckland .. 0 University . . .. > . . . 6 Encouraged by this success the local men attacked determinedly and dominated play for the next few minutes. They were imabile to pierce the defence, however, and piay swung back to the home end ’only to be relumed with electrifying suddenness. Brady was appointed to the Position of chairman of the Junior Advisory Beard, and to act as that hoard’s delegate to the Hamilton League. The Rules Committee submitted its recommendations, which were held over for discussion at next week’s meeting. Several matters relating to League affaire generally were fully gone into, and it was resolved to finalise these matters as soon as conveniently possible. Until the lease of Jlinemoa Park is completed the League cannot Put into shape- many of its intentions. It was decided to play the postponed fixtures for last week next Saturday, these fixtures being as follows: Seniors, 3 p.m., llinerrioa Park: Athletics v. United, No. 1. referee, Mr G. S.
