FIVE HUNDRED AFTERNOON.
A most enjoyable Five Hundred afternoon was given by the Hamilton Croquet Club, when it entertained its honorary members and friends on Saturday at Ihe Hacremai Tea Rooms. Before the game was commenced the trophies won during the season were presented by Mrs ]|. J. Grcensladc, vice-president, who welcomed Ihe guests and asked for the co-operation of the honorary members in helping forward Ihe new lawns. She congratulated the club on retaining the Furze Cup and also on again holding the South Auckland Stars. The prizes were won by Mrs Coombs, championship: Mrs c. Bartlett, handicap singles; handicap doubles went to Mesdarnes Totman and F. Gruar. The B championship was carried off by Mrs A. .1011, who also won the handicap singles. Mrs Menzies won the C singles and Mrs Murchi'o was victorious for golf croquet.
Then came another popular presentation —it was a lovely salad bowl—to the secretary, .Mrs A. 11. Powell, from the committee in appreciation of the loyal and efficient manner in which .she had worked in the interests of the club during the year. The hearty round ol' applause which greeted Idle recipient spoke highly of the esteem in which she is held by the members. .Mr J. Murray, in a eulogistic little speech, handed a lovely bouquet from tlie cluti to eacli of I he vice-presidents, Mcsdamcs P. E. Slovens and 11. J. Orcenslade. Then Five Hundred was started and was finally won by Mrs W. H. Stevens, who was handed a small choice original engraving as a prize. The lovely afternoon tea was a welcome interlude appreciated by all. ' At the conclusion of the day a vote of thanks was accorded Mr Wheeler, who placed liis room, furniture and attendants at the disposal of the club, who were gralcful for such a liberal i donation. j Amongst those present were: — Mcsdamcs P.
