TE AROHA BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of Ihe Te Aroha Borough Council was held on Wednesday everting, there being present His Worship the Mayer (Cr 11. Coulter) and Crs G. . Hedge, V. Hamilton. J. R. Niool, D. McMahon, J. A. Ritchie, S. Sellars, and A. Gordon. The auarry foreman, Mr J. Pilling, reported as follows for the month ending May 24: —Metal crushed 1529 yards' (9-54 yards dust in total). Expenses: Wages £199 9s 3d, power £25 9s. explosives £B, and sundries £l3; total £245 18s 3d. Cost of production 3s 'id per yard. On May 23 Inspector Paul and Mr Bain, chief inspector mining maehunery, visited the quarry, and expressed themselves as being pleased with the manner in which the quarry is being worked,.On the motkm of Cr Sellars the report was adopted. He considered, that the report was very satisfactory. The electrical engineer. Mr Dalton, reported that great inconvenience had been caused owing to the recent storms. During the gale the main reservoir was cracked in f-everal places. One end and one side of the reservoir had broken away doing damage to the extent of about £IOOO. The report was adopted, Cr Hamilton remarkinK that he had carried out the repairs caused by flood and storm in an expeditious and satisfactory manner. Council agreed to inspect the reservoir as early as possible and decide as to the best method of combatting the damage.

Mr P. M. Taylor was appointed poundkeeper.

Mr C. Skitrop, consulting engineer, submitted an estimate for regrading, reforming and rollirg streets in accordance with Teawahai streets improvement scheme. The streets to be covered with three or four (inches of 2 inch broken metal. The newly metalled surface to bo rolled ' and sprayed under pressure with hot asphalt which binds the metal together, forming a solid msss. The estimates are as follows: —Rewi Street £674 14s; Kenrick Street, £628 10s; Rolleston Street, £OO 4s; Lipsey Street. £267 6s; Whifaker Street North. £8.19 12s; Whitaker Street North £1199; Whitaker Street South, £466 18s: Whitaker Street. South, £1331: Brick Street, £2lO 2s; Boundary Bond, £172 2s; Bridge Street, £646 16s; Bingen Street, £434 7s: Puriri Street. £56 ss; Waihou Bead, £l6l 7s; Stanley Boad, £883; Terminus Street, £3lB 8s; Miller Street, £2OO l'Os; Stanley Road, £246 10s; Kenrick Street West. £741 16s; Jackson Street, £46 19s; Farmer Street, £l4O 17s; Gallagher Street, £93 18s; Rata Street, £l3l 0s 6d. Making'a total of £8836, on top of which will he the cost of necessary machinery, making a proposed estimate up to £12,000. —The report was referred to the Works' Committee. j

The treasurer reported that £llO had been received as goldfields revenue.

On the motion of Cr Hedge the salary of the borough foreman was increased to £338 per annum. Council agreed to finally write to several local taxi drivers for furious driving.

The treasurer reported that it was estimated that a proirt of £I2OO is anticipated this year from the municipal quarry, also a profit of £SOO from the water supply. The M'f.yor reported on the damages caused through flood, and it was decided to write the Minister for Public Works for a grant to cover the damages.
