WAIKATO COUNTY.

ANNUAL MEETING. At the annual meeting- of the Waikato County Council held on Tuesday. the following members were present: Councillors J. P. Bailey (chairman), W. Newell, T. 11. Henderson, T. Clarkln, W. Henry, T. Hiiiton.and T. B Insoil (clerk). Election of Chairman. For the office of chairman Mr .1. P. Ba'ley was re-elected unopposed to the position being proposed by Cr Henderson and seconded by Cr Newell. Mr Bailey returned thanks to the members for the trust reposed in him and for the support he had always received from the councillors and intimated that he would still, endeavour to carry on the work to the best of his ability. General Business. An application to the State Advances Department for a 10 per cent loan of £OOO brought, a reply to the Council that they would have to wait their turn. The Council in a letter to the District Highway Council pointed out that they do not favour the main highway road from Mercer to Ngarirawahia as it served only a few of (lie ratepayers in the County, and that, it was not desirable that a main highway should run parallel with the railway and river, but should take a different, route so as to open up and benefit a greater extent of agricultural country. Messrs Baker and HallJones, engineers to the Public Works Department were present and took part in the discussion that followed. A Cambride firm of sawmillers was instructed to cease carting timber for one month on the Te Miro roads owing to the damage done to same by their lorries. If Ihe firm in question failed to cease carling they w;ould have to enter into a bond for the repair of the roads.

Information was received from the Public Works Department that Victoria Road, Cambridge is in the opinion of the Main Highway Board, of insufficient importance to- be constituted a main highway:

Application was made by W. D. Thompson for a slaughter house license at Te Hoe. —Approved. The Crown Solicitor wrote, re soldiers' rates that it was lawful to issue execution in pursuance of any judgment against the. property of an assisted discharged soldier. A resolution that the license fee for taxis be £1 per annum and that driver's fee for same be £1 per annum'was carried. . . A letter was received. from the Taupifi Chamber of Commerce drawing at'tention to the flooded condition Of the roadside opposite the Taupiri Hall.—The matter was left in the hands of Gr Henry. A. letter was also received from (he same body re the growth of blackberries on the Orini Road nearTaupiri. -—lt'was decided to write to the Noxious Weeds Department re advice in this matter. An account was received from the Cambridge Read Board for repairs done to the road between Bank's corner and the Waikato County boundary during the recent railway strike.— The aoeount was received and forwarded to No. 2 District Highways Council.

A taxi license was granted to If. N. Sulham and a taxi drivers license granted to L.. C. Sanders. A letter was received from a ratepayer re the bad state of the Te lioe roads and the matter was left i.i the hands of the chairman to have repairs affected.

The Huntiy Branch of the Auckland Automobile Association asked for permission to erect two direction sign boards, one at Ohinewai and the other at the Rangiriri bridge .—Granted. A letter was received from the Piri Land Company stating that a pipe drain is required across the TaupiriOriru Road.—Left to Cr Henry to attend to.

An offer of £9 per annum for rent of the Rototuna Domain was received. -—The matter was left i nine hands of the clerk to draw up conditions and also call tenders for same and that the lease be for a period of over five years.

The Huntiy Branch of the Auckland Automobile Association wrote offering tlf> contribution towards the repair of the road between the Taupiri Gorge and the Huntiy Town Board boundary.

A letter was received from the road engineer at Te Ivauwhata, that the Maiaburu Road between Deaths and the top of the hill is badly cut up and about 10 chains requires to be re-metalled. The engineer was instructed lo get some metal quarried and repairs affected. Timber was also authorised to be ordered for the repairs of bridges and culverts in the Te Iloe and Maluliuru ridings. Several accounts were passed for payment.
