HOSPITAL SUBSIDIES.
WAIKATO’S POSITION, ’ ON LOWEST RATE. REDUCTION OF AREA SOUGHT, The fact that the Waikato Hospital Board will this year receive the lowest rate of subsidy given by the Department of Health, 14s 6d in the £, was commented on by the secretary, Mr W. I. Conradi, at a meeting of the board to-day, when he pointed out that the smaller an area and the greater the expenditure of a hospital district, the greater the subsidy. Wai_ kato was in the unfortunate position of having a very big area and high valuations and a comparatively small expenditure, and therefore it was called upon, in effect, to assist other poorer districts. The only way, ha could see to bring about an increase of the subsidy was to reduce thq area and increase the expenditure, It was decided to approach the Minister of Health with a view to bringing' about a reduction of the board’s area.
