TRAMS STILL IDLE.
MELBOURNE STRIKE. NEGOTIATION PROVE FUTILE. BOARD'S FIRM STAND. United Iress Association. MELBOURNE, May 6. A conference between t:he Tram-way Board, Trades Hall, and tramway employees' representatives discussed the tram strike to-day. The outlook is now more hopeful. The Sta/te Cabinet has decided no,t to intervene as the Tramway Board has all tfhe necess'ary authority to enforce discipline in Ms service and protect the public. The lack of trams to-day caused great inconvenience. The men tihls evening discussed tlhe proceedings of the conference, wthiidh. have not been madte public. Received May 7, 12.30 p.m. MELBOURNE, May 7. The Tramway Board, after a long discussion with the Trades Hall Disputes Committee and other representatives' of the men, refused to reinstate the gripman involved, and the strike remains unsettled. The Board's attitude is that work must be resumed before anything further is done in the matter.
