WAITRESSES PROTEST. SMALL WAGES: LONG HOURS. (A istrah'an rnd N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received May 6, 1.30 a.m. LONDON, May 6. The Dlaiily Herald says 'that a number of Messrs Lyons’waitresses at the Empire Exhibition have left owing to dissatisfaction with the conditions. The organiser of the Workers’ Union states that some received only 15/weekly, from which they had to pay 4s 4d in railway fares. On the other hand Messrs Lyons state that many waitresses malm Tss in /two days, but do not indicate whether 'this represents tips. Another effort to obtain labour for the Exhibition at wages which are a disgrace to the Empire met with no response. The Labour tixohLnge was asked for 32 women as cloakroom attendants, their hours of work being from 8 a.m. to 11 ip.m., with no free meals, the pay being 15s per week, It is ' not surprising that women emphatically refuse such an offer.
