Mr Cox, of the staff of the Hastings Tribune, is in Hamilton. Mr Cyril Towsey, of Auckland, is in Hamilton. lie is acting as official accompanist at the competitions. Sir Edward Elgar has been appointed Master of the King’s Musio in succession to Sir Walter Parratt. Messrs S. H. Osborn, of Dunedin, and Lawrence Watkins, of Wellington, iudges of elocution and music respectively at the Hamilton competitions, arrived this morning. Mr William Cullen has been appointed to the position of chief inspector of machinery, in succession to Mr Hood, who recently retired from the post. Mr A. Harris, M.P. for Waitemata, who has been on a tour of Britain and the Continent for some months past, is now in South Africa, on his way back to New Zealand. Mr Harris is due at Auckland about June 9. Mr W. C. Marchant, chief cleric at the Public Office of the Government Insurance Department, Wellington, has, at his own request, been retired on superannuation after nearly 40 years of service. The Governor-General, Lord Jellicoe, who is at present in Wellington, will return to Auckland on hoard H.M.S. Hood, which, with the other warships of the Imperial Service Squadron, will arrive at Auckland on Saturday morning. A pleasing little function took place at the close of the entertainment in the Theatre Royal last night, when the staff of the theatre met Mr Barrie Marschel, the retiring manager, and presented him with a handsome silver-mounted walking-stick, suitably inscribed. Mr A. Williams voiced the regret fell by the staff at Mr Marsehel’s departure, and wished him happiness and prosperity. He said that the relations between manager and staff had always been of the happiest. Mr Marschel feelingly acknowledged the gift and toe kindly wishes. His Grace, Archbishop Redwood, whose golden jubilee as a bishop was so recently celebrated in Wellington, accompanied by Rev. Father Smith, parish priest of Thorndon, will leave for Europe via Vancouver by the Niagara, which sails from Auckland on May 13. Both are to attend a big apostolic congress to be held in Amsterdam, commencing on July 23, and afterwards will visit Rome. They will return to New Zealand about the end of the year.
