LONDON FASHIONS.

A STRIKING CHOICE. (From a Correspondent). If one of the smartest French watering places should be your holiday destination, and if you know, or fear, that your outfit cannot compare in variety or smartness with the wonderful toilettes which will be surely worn there, just make up your mind that you will —for, believe me, you can I—achieve distinction by having two or three quite simple, but perfectly carried out, toilettes in allwhite, or grey, or beige, or cinnamon, the one-colour get-up from top to toe being really the most effective and striking choice of all. Once more was this proved at the muc'h-dJscussed matinee production of George Moore's comedy, "The Coming of Gabriellc," at the St James' when Athene Seyler appeared in a dress and cape-coat of striped crepe de chine, beige and blue and ,rose (very cleverly managed stripes they were, too) and a grey cloche hat with the, hitherto, almost inevitable cocarde trimming, for which, however, a new substitute has been found. Afterwards this wonderful actress, who just lately, you remember, transformed herself into the terrible dowdiness suited to the part of a "charlady," was the picture of smartness in a draped dress of soft black Geogelto with a contrasting brilliance of figured foulard' in black, and rose, and green, and yellow, let in at the sides and forming the upper part of the sleeves, while her last act dress was made of fuchsia-pink taffeta with narrow borderings of silver tissue, the front taking long straight lines, but the back being arranged with cross-over bodice folds edged with the silver, and then three impertinent little "bustle" frills of pleated georgette, a big black hat and patent leather shpes providing a telling contrast. But though these were all smart gowns, and smartly worn too, they did not achieve anything of the ! effect of distinction which Aimce do Burgh secured by a simple all-while crepe Marocain dress with a gracefully hanging tunic skirt, a pleated cape-wrap, and a. hat of white felt, white stockings and shoes. Another good gown of hers was of almoudgre'en crepe Bomain, with a hat of this same—and still most favoured —green which has gardenias massed high in front of the crown. And then, again, the toilettes which caught, and held the eye among the multi-cc-loured crowd' of gowns in the audience were all subdued onecolour schemes of grey or beige, Sybil Thorndiko, for one, looking charming in a grey crepe de chine dress and cloak, and rosette-trimmed hat, and Isobel Elsoni in a soft beige

"three-piece" in crepe 1 marocain and georgette, while I noticed, and admired a black-haired woman in softest grey from head to foot, with a couple of white gardenias caught against the side of her capo collar, and brown-haired Doris Uean, just as well suited by an all-grey scheme of crepe de chine dress, and crinoline hat and fox tie. Believe me, when in doubt wear a one-colour get up, and you will surely score a success. And, morover, be sure that one or more of your daytime holiday frocks arc made in the coat style, with just some inner and stud fasteners to hold it together at the right side of the waist, and then one outer fastening and ilnish—at the left side —of long scarf sash, or tiny Hat bow, or button or buckle. For there is nothing quite so comfortable, or, indeed, so smart.
