“This is. no doubt, the cause of so many accidents at. Chaneys,” said Air Wyvern Wilson, S.AL, at the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court recently, when he convicted and fined a middle aged man for trespassing on a railway. The defendant had been found asleep and under the influence of liquor on the Cheviot line about dusk by the engine driver of a train travelling on that route. The driver’s attention had been drawn to the defendant by his having moved, and the train had been stopped in time to avoid a fatality, reports the Lyttelton Times. The defendant explained that he had walked a long distance, and that his swag was heavy. Ho said his health was at fault, and that he lay down arid had slept mi Ilia sleepers—probably from fatigue.
