A “GHOSTLY” SCENE

“SPOOK” THEORY SHATTERRD. A nervous individual passing up Gordon Street, Dannevirke, on a recent evening, might have been pardoned if lie imagined he saw an apparition from the spirit world. From a distance patches of white could be seen flitting round in a paddock near High Street, and the effect (remarks the Evening News) was most weird. But investigation shattered the spook theory. It was something more solid than a spirit clad in white —a grim pugilistic combat was being waged in the dark, and Ihc ghost-like effect was due to the manoeuvrings of an elderly combatant, who had doffed his coat to have greater freedom. 11 was a novel contest for the two or three favoured spectators. There was no ring-, no l nnounccr, no timekeepers, no referee, but apparently plenty of goodwill. When the younger and more agile of the pair knocked bis opponent off bis feet with an uppercut the prostrate one cheerfully informed his assailant that “that was a good one,” and when the dose was repeated he was equally complimentary. When they came to “holts” they “broke” by mutual consent. During their dialogue' between the punches the corpulent one was heard to bemoan the fact that lie didn't have the wind of bis opponent, and the latter denied that he was a professional and consoled his battered enemy by telling him that his wind was rotten loo —he was a very heavy smoker. And as if lu prove his words he invited the veteran to have a sit down and a smoke bclore they started again. It. was all very real, very grim, and a ridiculously novel combat. What it was all about wasn’t made very clear to an inquirer, who was told that - 'it was only a personal grievance” —and it is said thereby hangs a tale. At any rate, the rest apparently cooled their ardour, hostilities ended in compromise, and the combatants as they left the scene of conflict were scon swallowed up in the night, piobably both sadder hut wiser.
