MONTREAL SKYSCRAPERS.

MORE LIKE NEW YORK. Montreal, the largest city in the Dominion of Canada, is running New York a close second in the number of high buildings stic is putting up, according to a correspondent in the New ] York Times. Not only are enormous j office buildings being erected to care j for the' rapidly-increasing commerciallife of the city, but several months ago wc witnessed one of the most interesting tilings it has ever fallen to my lot to see. One of the best-known of Montreal department stores drew up plans for expansion of its build- | jugs. Unfortunately, these plans were hindered by the presence of a building of white stone. Thsi did not bother the owner of the department store a bit. He promptly sent for a young engineer, who moved this intruding building several hundred feet away.

Horses and windlasses were used, and the building, which, it must not be forgotten, was several stories high, was hound round with length after length of wire to make it firm enough to withstand the rigours of ils trip up the street. Montreal was greatly fascinated by the spectacle of a huge stone building being moved such a distance. Change in Type. Another thing in which Montreal is rapidly changing is in the type of its department buildings. There have been, l'or about 12 years or so, apart ments, and very fine apartments, in Montreal. Within the last few months, however, ground has been broken for what will be one of the largest and most modern apartment buildings in the country. It will be right at the heart of Montreal, a few steps from St. Catherine street, Montreal’s main thoroughfare. And, by the way, there is a movement on foot to do away with the names of the streets and substitute numbers, from 1 to 64. Maps of the city, wilh the numbered streets outlined in red, will be provided in the railway stations and hotels, and it will be an easy matter for a stranger to find his way about. We are really becoming more like New York every day.
